Luther moves to his own grown-up house bed!
The next stage in Luther’s room makeover, and for getting him out of our bed, was to get him his own grown-up bed. I was keen for it to be low so he could have the independence of free movement, and that it was fun for him to be in. The house frame beds really caught my attention. The possibilities for dressing them seemed brilliant and there are so many play options! I found Sweet Home From Wood on Etsy and loved that they had so many sizing and fencing options.
We opted for a small double (120cm x 190cm) so that there would be room for me to sleep in there too if needed and so it could be a reading nook as well. We chose fenced sides for aesthetic purposes, rather than to keep him from falling out, but each side is removable so the bed can be easily changed and transformed. We chose birch as it is a strong wood and the soft colour is lovely. I’d planned to paint the frame white but once it was built I knew it was going to look better left in the natural wood. Especially against the blue walls!
How it arrives…
The bed arrived from Latvia in two flatpack parcels. The instructions said it would take two people 20 minutes to build but I wasn’t patient enough to wait for daddy to get home. It took Luther and I an hour and a half but then he did keep running off with the screws, I made two mistakes and we paused in the middle whilst he had a feed. All in all not so bad! The bed is beautifully made and nits together with big screws that go into metal grooves and tighten with an allen key. We got the slated version to keep air circulating under the mattress and the slats lay neatly in place on the frame. I have yet to screw these into place and actually might not bother!
Does he sleep in it?…
The look of the bed was obviously key and I think it’s wonderful. I’ve dressed it with fairy lights and two long pieces of white muslin and it’s quite magical. The main thing was obviously that Luther liked it and, more importantly, that slept in it. He absolutely loves it. It took a day for him to get used to getting on and off it backwards and he was thrilled to be able to play on it.
The first night in it I was quite nervous. I was desperate for him to like it, which he did, but I wanted him to sleep. First night, ten minutes and out fast asleep in his Sleeyhead. I was so thrilled I ran into the kitchen doing a victory dance and high fived the husband!
Sweet Home From Wood also make a mini version for dolls which is such a sweet idea! You can see their beds and get some design ideas via their Instagram page.
I am now looking at bedding and some decorations and will keep posting with decorative updates!
